You are what you eat and your skin is a direct reflection of your diet. Often clients struggling with skin issues have tried every topical treatment and come to me for a last resort, professional opinion. I always encourage these clients to inspect what they are putting in their body instead of on their body to find a source of their concerns. Anti-inflammatory, low-carbohydrate eating can improve your skin's appearance, as well as positively impact your overall health.
"A few studies have found eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables can improve skin tone and help with complexion" - Melissa Babcock, MD
So, what foods are recommended to reduce inflammation while reducing carbohydrates?
Green Tea (for antioxidants)
Salmon and Tuna (for omega-3s)
Tomatoes, Watermelon, Grapefruit, Aparagus, and Red Cabbage (for lycopene)
Everyone's bodily makeup is unique, so foods will affect everyone differently. If you notice a certain type of food, such as dairy or gluten, negatively affecting your skin or overall health, it is best to avoid these when possible.
Just like there are foods that make a positive impact, there are also things to avoid as much as possible:
Trans Fat. Dangerous form of fat found in fried foods, baked goods, margarine, and more. These foods can cause inflammation and increase bad cholesteral levels while lowering good cholesteral levels.
Sugar. Increases inflammation and causes skin to appear aged.
Processed Carbohydrates. Found in white bread, pizza crust, pasta, and more. Damages the skin's collagen which leads to wrinkles.
Small changes can make a big impact. Start incorporating the "good" foods while reducing the "bad" foods and watch your skin glow!
