Teen Skincare 101: Building a Simple Routine for Healthy, Clear Skin

Updated: 2 days ago

Teen acne remedies

As of the fall of 2024, I now have two teenagers in the house. These teenage years are bringing a whirlwind of changes, and their skin is no exception. With hormonal shifts, increased oil production, and the occassional breakout, it's the perfect time to establish a simple, yet effective, skincare routine. Don't worry - achieving healthy, glowing skin doesn't have to be complicated! Here's everything you need to know about the four steps of skincare: cleanse, exfoliate, tone, and moisturize.

Cleanse: The Foundation of Healthy Skin

Cleansing is the first step to clear, balanced skin. It removes dirt, oil, and makeup that can clog pores and cause breakouts.

Tips for Teens:

  • Use gentle, sulfate-free cleanser to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils

  • Wash your face twice daily - once in the morning and again at night

  • Avoid scrubbing too hard - let the cleanser do the work

Why It's Important: Consistent cleansing keeps your pores clear, reduces acne, and preps your skin for the rest of your routine.

Exfoliate: Clear Away Dead Skin Cells

Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells that can dull your complexion and clog pores. However, over-exfoliating can cause irritation, so moderation is key.

Tips for Teens:

  • Exfoliate 1 - 2 times a week using a gentle scrub or chemical exfoliant with ingredients like salicylic acid or lactic acid.

  • Avoid harsh scrubs with large particles that can damage your skin

  • Always follow up with a moisturizer to replenish hydration

Why It's Important: Exfoliation promotes smoother skin, prevents breakouts, and allows your other skincare products to absorb better.

Tone: Balance and Refresh Your Skin

Toners often get overlooked, but they're a game-changer for keeping your skin balanced and refreshed.

Tips for Teens:

  • Choose an alcohol-free toner to avoid drying out your skin

  • Look for soothing ingredients like rose water or aloe vera for sensitive skin, or witch hazel for acne-prone skin

  • Apply toner with a cotton pad or gently pad it into your skin with clean hands

Why It's Important: Toners remove any leftover impurities, restore your skin's PH balance, and prepare it for moisturizing.

Moisturize: Lock in Hydration

Even if your skin feels oily, moistuizing is essential to maintain its health and prevent overproduction of oil.

Tips for Teens:

  • Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer if you have oily or acne-prone skin

  • For dry or combination skin, look for a hydrating formula with ingredients like hyaluronic acid

  • Apply moisturizer morning and night for best results

Why It's Important: Moisturizing keeps your skin hydrated, strengthens your skin barrier, and prevents issues like dryness and irritation

***Bonus Tips for Skincare Success***

  • Change your pillowcases frequently: Your pillowcase can collect oil, dirt, and bacteria, which can transfer to your skin while you sleep. Change your pillowcase weekly for cleaner skin.

  • Incorporate masks into your routine: If you have extra time, treat your skin to a mask once a week. Clay masks are great for oily or acne-prone skin, while hydrating masks can soothe and replenish dry skin.

  • Don't pick at pimples: This can lead to scarring and more breakouts.

  • Drink water and eat whole foods: Your skin reflects what's going on inside your body.

  • Keep it consistent: Stick to your routine and you'll see results over time.

Taking care of your skin as a teen doesn't have to be overwhelming. By sticking to the basics - cleanse, exfoliate, tone, and moisturize - you'll build a solid foundation for healthy skin now and in the future.
